Make your Mark: ArtPrize Nine
ArtPrize season is here and we couldn’t be more ready. ArtPrize Nine is all about honoring the creativity and courage that it takes to make your mark. It takes serious courage to step out and create something, whether it be a painter attempting a new work of art or a barista creating a signature drink. We are here to celebrate those risks and their creative outcomes.
As the Official Coffee Sponsor of ArtPrize Nine, we decided to choose our Brazil Primavera as the ArtPrize coffee. This coffee, as its name might allude, comes from the Primavera Farm in Brazil. They, in their own way, have taken courageous steps as they have become one of the most sustainable farms in Brazil. They recently won third place in the 2016 Sustainable Farm Awards for “Most Sustainable Farm in Brazil” for their efforts in water reutilization, reforestation, and natural composting. The outcome of their efforts is a beautiful coffee with tasting notes of peanut butter and milk chocolate. Brazil Primavera is a coffee that can be enjoyed by a longtime coffee lover or someone who is just dipping their toes into the world of coffee for the first time.
The coffee bag, beautifully designed by our friends at ArtPrize, embraces the theme of the event completely through its vibrant, painterly design. Our ArtPrize Nine coffee can be found in 12 oz. bags at select Meijer stores in ArtPrize displays alongside Founders ArtPrize Beer, in ArtPrize Hubs, and our West Side and Downtown coffee shops throughout the duration of the event.
Fresh New Look
Our Coffee Truck got a makeover just in time for the festivities! Our design team spearheaded the truck redesign and found their inspiration in our new coffee packaging.
"The task of designing a new wrap for the truck came up right around the same time that we were finishing up the designs for the new coffee identities. We decided to use the artwork from the West Side Blend coffee identity. The graphic for this particular identity is a simplified map of the West Side of Grand Rapids which, as we all know, has a lot of historical significance for Ferris — it has always been our home. The custom typography on both the label and the truck were designed to mimic the old neon signs that can be found all over this side of town. We feel that this is part of what gives this side of town its unique character. The line “Bringing the West Side to You” is our way of connecting the design of the truck to the design of the label, and more importantly, communicates our love for the West Side to our coffee truck customers, wherever the truck may be.”- Kacie Forbes, Graphic Design Intern
Food, Food, Food
Besides its spiffy new look, the truck will also be featuring a food menu! The menu will include some staple items from our cafe locations, including our Turkey and Chickpea sandwiches, fresh fruit and yogurt parfaits, and Southwest Quinoa bowls. This menu offers both vegan and vegetarian options, so there’s a little something for everyone! Our truck will also be serving a variety of drink options, including: brewed coffee, espresso drinks, chai, hot chocolate, and cider.
As if a tasty spread of food and drinks wasn’t enough, we will also have two specials running throughout the event:
- Lunch Combo: Ice tea or cold brew coffee plus 1 lunch item (sandwich or quinoa bowl) for $9
- Cider and Donuts: We will have fresh Sprinkles donuts and hot/cold cider available everyday for just $5 (Starting Fri 9/22)

"Birds in Flight" by Nick Mayo
We are very fortunate to have both of our cafes as venues for this years ArtPrize. Our West Side cafe will be featuring a photography series titled “Silent Conversations” by Chelsea & Mariano Nix Cortez. Our Downtown cafe will feature art from three artists: photography titled “Birds in Flight” by Nick Mayo, a cold wax painting series titled “Three Days at Sea” by Barbara Hoffman, and an acrylic piece titled “Air” by Lizabeth Yager.
