Story
The coffee farmers from this part of Kayanza Province were ecstatic when a new washing station opened nearby. Now they can bring cherries for same-day processing, ensuring higher-quality green coffee and greater premiums for their labor. A local farmer-turned-business owner recognized the demand for this facility and in partnership with JNP Coffee, completed construction in 2021.
A key difference in its design is tanks lined with tile, rather than traditional poured concrete. Much easier to clean between fully washed processing cycles, tiled tanks enhance the purity of the final product. The river water here is cold and fresh, sourced from the mountains high above the washing station, then pumped uphill to the wet mill. Akeza coffee, which means “beautiful” in Kirundi, also benefits from the volcanic soil that nourishes each tree. This terroir produces a bright taste that is delicious, with sweet and spicy notes.
