Rwanda Huye Mountain
With the aim of providing supreme coffee of the region to international markets while also supporting his community, David Rubanzangabo opened Huye Mountain. His background in agronomy and working in agriculture has led him to owning and operating two successful washing stations in the region. What started as a small operation near where he grew up blossomed into a large successful business for surrounding farmers, helping to grow the reputation of Rwandan coffees.
By providing a local washing station, David has provided local farmers a place to sell and wash coffee cherries. More than 1,300 producers deliver their freshly picked coffee cherries to 26 collecting stations around the Huye community, where a truck visits daily to collect the farmers' coffee during harvest season. Washed and dried, quality is tested regularly with the help with David’s sister, Rachel, which provides David the time to lead the tourism program they offer.
Anyone (yes, you!) can tour the farm to learn about the coffee process from seed to cup with hands on experiences. This program not only helps educate coffee roasters and enthusiasts alike but also provides scholarship money for the children of local farmers. Bringing the mission of Huye Mountain full circle with its passion to empower the local community.
The mineral rich soil and high elevation paired with the farms top-notch processing, have made these coffees showstoppers. Bold tastings notes of marmalade, toffee pudding, graham cracker create a cup of complexity of admiration.
