Story

Brought to us in association with the International Women's Coffee Alliance (IWCA), whose mission is to empower women in the international coffee community to achieve meaningful and sustainable lives; and to encourage and recognize the participation of women in all aspects of the coffee industry. This coffee first was presented to us in 2020 when we visited Guatemala. Our VP of Coffee was cupping nearly 80 cups of coffee when El Vergel caught his attention...and his tastebuds.

Purchased in 2015, el Vergel farm lies close to the Mexican border, north of Quetzaltenango. The farm is about 121 acres on the western slope of the Sierra Madre mountain range in San Marcos with a beautiful waterfall that runs through it. Led by two agronomists in charge of the farm, experimental plots are evaluated and analysis of their organic agronomic management systems help improve this coffee year after year.

THIS COFFEE STANDS FOR WOMEN

Bold Flavor, Empowering Impact: Introducing our Women in Coffee Program
relationships first

Directly sourced

Our sourcing methods focus on building sustainable, long-term relationships within the industry. From small, family-owned micro lots to large farms with hundreds of acres, the farmers we work with are dedicated to their craft with expert precision and humble pride.

Farmed by women

This specialty coffee has been produced, farmed, and harvested by women. Certified as "Women Farmers Coffee" by the Trade Federation of Special Coffee of Guatemala (FECCEG), these certifications bring visibility to the hard work of women farmers and offer notoriety to the premium coffees they grow.

TRACEABILITY MATTERS

Enjoy knowing that this coffee is sourced directly from a small 121-acre farm in Guatemala. The farm, el Vergel, lies close to the Mexican border on the western slope of the Sierra Madre mountain range with a beautiful waterfall that runs through it.

DESIGNED WITH PURPOSE

When we determined we would be creating a Women In Coffee product line, we wanted to elevate the coffee further by seeking out a female artist to create unique packaging that would bring the story to life. Sheyda Sebetian is a designer and illustrator born in Guatemala, who draws inspiration from feminism and the relationship between humans and nature.

FROM THE DESIGNER OF

GUATEMALA EL VERGEL

"I am deeply inspired by Guatemalan indigenous women, who support their families and the local economy with their beautiful arts and crafts, and who show thoughtful consideration towards nature. I think that by being identified as a woman and being around so much nature growing up in Guatemala, it naturally shifted my work and inspired me. I was very excited about the fact that this is a product that comes from Guatemala and from a land that is led by women." - Sheyda Sebetain, graphic designer
